Churchill Village
Churchill is an ancient place of habitation.
Roman and Saxon remains have been found there, Churchill and Sarsden were Saxon Manors,
and Churchill was mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086).Although it is a small village it has some very fine buildings and is known locally for its array of independent furniture workshops.
Among its attractions are two churches; a memorial to William Smith (the founder of modern geology);
an unusual Victorian Gothic Fountain; a Heritage Centre; and an 18 foot Tapestry in the village hall
celebrating the millenium in 2000, and showing 1000 years of village history.Among its famous sons are Warren Hastings - 1773 - first Governor General of India, and William Smith - 1831 - Canal Builder, Map Maker & "Father of English Geology"!
