Dr. Lawrence Goldman Dr. Lawrence Goldman is a historian in the University of Oxford, a Fellow of St. Peter's College, and Editor of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. He teaches modern British and American history and has published widely on the political and social history of both nations in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The current edition of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography was published in 2004 and contains more than 56,000 biographies of the most notable figures in British History. At 65 million words in length, the Oxford DNB is the longest work in the history of the English language. It contains the work of more than ten thousand scholars and is published in two formats: Print (sixty volumes!) and also On Line.

Dr. Goldman talked briefly about the Dictionary, its composition, and its principles of inclusion. He then showed how it can be used to trace the histories of motoring, car manufacture, automotive engineering and motor racing in Britain over the past century.

From carburettors to cats'eyes, we learned all about the history of cars in one hour!
